Mind-Body Connection
How your physical health and mental health interact.
Your physical health doesn’t just affect your body and your mental health doesn’t just affect your mind. Your mind and body are a heavily intertwined system, and nurturing one can dramatically help the other.
How does the body affect the mind?
Physical decline, illness, or impaired sleep and nutrition can trigger or worsen psychological conditions. When we don’t feel our best, this can cause increased risk of stress, anxiety, depression, and more. Even dealing with long-term illnesses like heart disease or chronic pain can drain mental energy, making it more likely that your mental health will suffer.
On the other hand, when you make time for regular movement, prioritize sleep and nutrition, and try to minimize the amount of stress on your body, you can even boost your mental health. Physical movement releases endorphins which can increase mood, calm your nervous system, and reduce stress. This movement can be as simple as a short walk, yoga, or dancing in your kitchen. Moving mindfully can ground you and help you process emotions in a physical way.
How does the mind affect the body?
Stress, anxiety, depression, and other conditions aren’t just in your head — they create profound physiological responses in your body ranging from impaired sleep to a weakened immune system. They can even change your perception of pain, making existing physical conditions like arthritis harder to manage. Chronic mental health conditions can also increase levels of stress hormones, which, if left untreated, can lead to problems with blood sugar, heart rate, or blood pressure.
However, having a positive attitude can make a difference. People with chronic illness have been found to recover better when they have positive mental states like gratitude and optimism. Real positivity can improve your health by reducing the stress which creates the physiological responses mentioned above.
What can I do?
With the mind and body working together to keep you healthy, it is crucial to nurture both sides of the connection. The combination of daily movement and positive thinking is a great start to building the mind-body connection. Even small steps can increase your health. If you are struggling with your mental health or the negative mental or physical side effects stemming from it, reach out to a professional for support.
